'The Thames from the Tower to Westminster'
A perspective map view of the River Thames through the City, Westminster, Southwark and Lambeth, from the Tower to Westminster, capturing the river’s course through the heart of London and highlighting its bridges, embankments and prominent riverside landmarks. At the lower edge is the Tower of London with the Custom House, Billingsgate and the Coal Exchange nearby, together with Lower Thames Street running parallel to the river. Moving westward, London Bridge crosses the Thames with Fishmongers’ Hall, All Hallows Pier, Southwark Bridge and the Monument all clearly marked, while on the southern bank appear Borough and its market, St Saviour’s (Southwark Cathedral) and London Bridge Station. Further upstream, Blackfriars Bridge, the City of London Schools, Temple Gardens and Somerset House line the north bank, with the Southwark Railway Bridge and Shot Tower visible opposite. Waterloo Bridge follows, leading to the Adelphi, the Strand and Charing Cross Station, with Cleopatra’s Needle standing prominently on the Victoria Embankment. At the far end of the view Westminster Bridge crosses to the Palace of Westminster, with the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey dominating the skyline, alongside St Thomas’s Hospital on the south bank. The map combines decorative pictorial detail with clarity of topography, illustrating the Thames as both London’s commercial artery and its ceremonial spine in the late Victorian period.
