'Sketch of Apalachicola Bay'
A detailed hydrographic sketch of Apalachicola Bay, showing soundings, channels, bars and anchorages at the mouth of the Apalachicola River, prepared for navigational use by merchant vessels entering this shallow and shifting harbour. The survey reflects the rise of Apalachicola as a principal cotton-exporting port on the Gulf of Mexico in the 1830s. Formerly the site of a British trading post known as “Cottonton,” the town was renamed Apalachicola in 1831 and expanded swiftly with the cotton trade. Cotton from Alabama and Georgia descended via the Chattahoochee–Flint–Apalachicola river system to the Gulf. Contemporary accounts noted substantial brick warehouses lining the waterfront, reflecting its prosperity. Its hazardous bars and shifting shoals made accurate surveys essential for merchant captains and insurers serving the harbour.
