'Sketch of China Proper shewing the places open to foreign intercourse 1866.'
A compact, hand-coloured picture of the treaty-port system as it stood in 1866, extending beyond China proper to include Korea, Japan, Formosa, Hainan and northern Luzon. Provincial boundaries and washes make Qing administrative geography readily legible, while the marked ports turn the map into a commercial index: Canton, Amoy, Foochow, Ningpo and Shanghai had been opened by the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, and the treaties of 1858–60 greatly widened the network and the rights of foreign merchants and diplomats. Published only two years after the defeat of the Taiping forces at Nanking, it captures a moment when coastal and Yangtze trade was being reorganised around steamship services and the foreign-administered Imperial Maritime Customs. In spite of its obvious flaws, the map is exceptionally scarce in separate-sheet form: we have identified no other dealer or auction record for this map.
