'Tracks of Captain Fayrer'
The routes of the transatlantic steamship Liverpool from her maiden voyage in November 1838 to October 1839, under the command of Captain Robert John Fayrer. Built of wood by Humble & Milcrest of Liverpool and launched on 14 October 1837, Liverpool was the first steamship constructed and fully fitted for regular transatlantic service. She sailed from Liverpool for New York on 20 October 1838 with 60 passengers, but was forced back to Cork by a severe gale. Resailing on 6 November, she arrived in New York on 23 November after a 16-day passage — the first Atlantic crossing by a two-funnelled paddle steamer, achieved just a year after Sirius completed the first continuous steam crossing.
