'Südtirol—Provinz Bozen—Dolomiten'
An expansive German-language pictorial panorama of South Tyrol and the Dolomites by Heinrich C. Berann, viewed southwards from the Brenner frontier across the Puster, Eisack and Adige valleys. Bozen, Meran, Brixen and Bruneck are picked out in red, surrounded by an extraordinary sweep of Alpine topography extending from the Ortler massif to Cortina, the Sella and Marmolada. Roads, railways and the region’s still-limited early lift infrastructure are carefully incorporated into the landscape. Berann’s underlying composition is documented from 1954, while this issue appears to date from about 1962. It retains the railway from Dobbiaco to Cortina, whose northern section closed in March 1962, but does not show the Riscone–Plan de Corones cableway, opened in December 1963. The infrastructure consequently preserves a convincingly pre-1963 cartographic state, capturing South Tyrol immediately before the rapid expansion of its modern lift-served ski resorts.
