'Sussex'
A richly decorative illustrated map of Sussex, published shortly after the Second World War to commemorate the county’s agricultural, military, and strategic contribution to the war effort. The map records patterns of wartime food production, identifies the so-called “Flying Bomb Alley” traversed by V-1 and V-2 rockets, and depicts the D-Day armada assembling and sailing from the Sussex coast, emphasising the county’s frontline role along the English Channel. Text panels reference the wartime expansion of British farming and the work of the Women’s Institutes, while inset views depict landmarks including Arundel Castle, Lewes Castle, Bodiam Castle, and Chichester Cathedral. Heraldic devices—including the arms of Canada, whose troops embarked from the south coast for their part in Operation Overlord—together with regimental insignia and civic arms, enrich the design. A quotation from Winston Churchill—declaring “This was their finest hour”—reinforces the map’s patriotic and commemorative purpose, making it both an attractive decorative work and a vivid record of regional pride in wartime Britain.
