'The Arctic Sea between Behring Strait and Baffin Bay, Shewing the discoveries of 1851'
A detailed record of the discoveries made during the extensive search operations of 1850–51 to determine the fate of Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated Northwest Passage expedition (1845–48), as documented by Captains Austin and Penny. The British Naval Franklin Search Expedition of 1850–51, under Captain Horatio Austin, proceeded via Baffin Bay and Lancaster Sound in search of Franklin’s missing ships. Four vessels — HMS Resolute (Austin), HMS Assistance (Erasmus Ommanney), HMS Intrepid (Cator), and HMS Pioneer (Sherard Osborn) — sailed from London, joining the ships of William Penny and Sir John Ross, the earlier 1850 British search under Charles Forsyth, and the United States expedition of 1850–51 led by Edwin De Haven. Collectively, these efforts established that Franklin had wintered at Beechey Island. Extensive coastal surveys, sledging journeys, and scientific observations were undertaken, marking one of the most concerted phases of Arctic exploration in the nineteenth century.
