'The British Governments in Nth. America, laid down agreeable to the Proclamation of Octr. 7, 1763 // Bermuda or Summer islands'
The Royal Proclamation of October 7, 1763, issued by King George III, defined British territorial boundaries in North America following the French and Indian War. It established the Proclamation Line along the Appalachian Mountains, restricting colonial settlement westward to preserve Indigenous lands - which the map notes as "Lands Reserved for Indians". The proclamation reorganized British territories, creating the provinces of Quebec, East Florida, and West Florida, while reaffirming British control of Bermuda (also known as the Summer Islands). It aimed to stabilize relations with Native tribes and regulate trade and treaties. The restriction on westward expansion angered many colonists and contributed to rising tensions that eventually led to the American Revolution. Interesting archipelagic treatment of Florida.
