'Map of the Coast of Siam, China &c. to illustrate Gutzlaff's Voyages'
Karl (or Charles) Friedrich August Gützlaff (1803–1851) was a German Lutheran missionary who played an important role in the acquisition and early history of British Hong Kong. One of the first Protestant missionaries in Bangkok (1828) and the first Lutheran missionary in China (1831–1848), Gützlaff was a gifted linguist and prolific author, renowned for his command of Chinese language and culture. He adopted Chinese dress and could reportedly pass as native. In 1832 he joined Hugh Hamilton Lindsay on a six-month clandestine coastal reconnaissance of China to assess potential sites for British trading colonies. This expedition identified Hong Kong as “a very eligible spot,” laying the groundwork for its acquisition in 1841. During the First Opium War (1839–1842), Gützlaff served as interpreter to the British government. After the war he became a magistrate at Ningbo and Zhoushan and was appointed Chinese Secretary to the British administration in Hong Kong, placing him at the administrative heart of the colony’s formative years.
