'The Map Maker: "Now that you've joined us, the Führer will make a special map for you!"'
Arthur Szyk’s The Map Maker is a brilliantly acerbic satirical attack on the Axis, first published in Esquire magazine in 1942. Set in the fictitious mapmaking firm “Schicklgruber & Company” (a reference to Hitler’s family name before it was changed), the scene shows Hitler laboriously drafting a blood-red fantasy map of “German South America,” inspired, absurdly, by a copy of Idiot’s Delight lying at his feet. Joseph Goebbels welcomes General Tojo into the Axis fold with the line, “Now that you’ve joined us, the Führer will make a special map for you!”, while Mussolini, Franco and Amin al-Husseini stand by as eager “customers,” and Goering and Himmler lurk among the clutter. Scattered on the floor are cards listing further clients—including Pétain—and blank map templates, symbolising the insatiable and delusional territorial ambitions of the Axis regimes. Szyk, a Polish-Jewish émigré who fled to London in 1937 and moved to New York in 1940, became renowned for his ferocious wartime caricatures, using an illustrative style to expose the brutality, vanity and theatrical posturing of fascist leaders. The Map Maker stands as one of his most pointed and memorable visual indictments of Nazi geopolitical fantasy.
