'To the Worshipfull the Lords Proprietors of Romney Marsh and the Adjacent Levells—The description of Romney Marsh, Walland Marsh, Denge Marsh & Guilford Marsh, with the divisions of their waterings, their heads, arms, principall sewers, & their gutts for the conveying of the fresh waters that fall into the same, and also the levells of Wittersham, Shirley Moore & the surrounded marshes from Appledoor Channel lying to the River of Rothersbridge into Newender, Sandhurst & Bodiam, together with the harbours of Rye & Winchelsey, with the marshes adjoyning.'
A detailed early-18th-century engraved map of Romney Marsh and its environs, encompassing Walland Marsh, Dungeness and Guildford Marsh, and extending to include Rye, Winchelsea, Tenterden, Bodiam Castle, Sandhurst and Hythe. The map depicts the Isle of Oxney, the sea wall and estuarine defences north of Rye, and a complex network of rivers, channels and tidal waterways within a landscape still shaped by tidal influence. It records the marshes before the later construction of the Royal Military Canal, which drained and consolidated much of the area, transforming former sea and river channels into low-lying pasture while leaving the Isle of Oxney as higher ground, though retaining its historic name. Originally published as an illustration to Harris’s History of Kent, the map is an important contemporary document of early coastal management and land reclamation.
