An exceptionally early Italian ski-area map of Passo del Tonale, spanning the high pass between Ponte di Legno and Vermiglio beneath the Presena–Adamello skyline. Published in 1939, it records the resort at the very moment mechanical uplift arrived. An Istituto Geografico Militare contour base is overprinted with extensive red downhill ski routes and flagged starting points, broad blue-shaded ski grounds, the blue pass road and a green slittovia north of Tonale; routes extend towards Ponte di Legno, Vermiglio and Passo Presena. Labelled photographs around all four sides help skiers identify the surrounding summits. The design therefore performs the two jobs of a modern piste map—precise route planning and intuitive reading of mountain terrain—but keeps them graphically separate. Produced just as Heinrich C. Berann’s pioneering oblique winter panoramas were emerging, it is a fascinating transitional or “proto-modern” piste map: a precursor in design to the familiar all-in-one panoramic form, though contemporary with its earliest examples. Its slittovia was a cable-hauled passenger sledge, winched uphill over snow before chairlifts and surface lifts superseded this short-lived technology. Tonale’s first installation dates to 1939, making the map a near-contemporary record of the pass’s conversion from touring landscape into mechanised ski resort.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order.
