'Treasure Island August 1750'
A compact mid-20th century printing of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, the most famous fictional treasure map in literary history, illustrating Captain Flint’s buried treasure on a remote, unidentified island. With its "X that marks the spot," the map has become an enduring symbol of adventure and piracy, shaping countless portrayals of treasure maps in popular culture. Key elements include Skeleton Island, Spyglass Hill, a compass rose, and nautical soundings, all of which lend authenticity to the chart. Stevenson, who reportedly drew the map himself, created a vivid and immersive setting that has captivated readers for generations. Although the island is fictional, clues in the story suggest a location in the Caribbean or the Spanish Main, with various theories pointing to Norman Island in the British Virgin Islands, Cocos Island near Costa Rica, or Isla de la Juventud off Cuba as possible inspirations. The island’s undefined location heightens the tale’s mystique, making it a timeless emblem of high-seas adventure and the allure of hidden treasure. Originally published in 1883, the novel and its map are set during the golden age of piracy, with the map itself bearing the date August 1750.
