'South America—Coast of Chile—Valparaiso Bay'
A chart of Valparaíso “by the officers of H.M.S. Beagle,” dated 1835. The Beagle called at the port twice during her celebrated second voyage (1831–1836) under Robert FitzRoy, with Charles Darwin aboard as naturalist. The vessel first visited on 23 July 1834, where Darwin wrote that he had “got scent of some fossil bones… if gold or galloping will get them, they shall be mine.” After exploring the surrounding countryside, he procured horses and, on 14 August, set off into the volcanic Andes, ascending Cerro La Campana and visiting a copper mine before continuing to Santiago. The Beagle called at Valparaíso for a second time on 11 March 1835; upon his return from another Andean excursion “with half a mule’s load” of specimens, Darwin wrote to his family that his discoveries, if confirmed, would be crucial to the “theory of the formation of the world.” His Chilean observations — including the 1835 earthquake and marine fossils found high in the Andes — proved formative in shaping his geological thinking, later foundational to his evolutionary theory.
