SKU: P-7-004841
[W. G. (William Gilbert) Grace. Batsman. Greatest cricketer. Gloucestershire cricketer] "The triumphs GRACE hath won," are words specially applicable in reference to W.G. of the name. For thirty years, to be precise thirty and one, his record has been one long series of brilliant performances. Of him it may truly be none but himself can be his parallel. As an all-round Cricketer since when a boy of sixteen, he made his first appearance in an important match, he has been absolutely without a rival. To give his big scores in detail would be to give a history of first-class cricket since 1864. Over a hundred times he has scored the hundred in first-class matches. Even this by no means exhausts his great innings, which reached their highest in his 400 not out against 22 of Grimsby, in July, 1876, at Grimsby, the highest individual innings against odds. Three times he has made two scores of a hundred in a first-class match. In his day too one of the very best bowlers as well as a splendid field. He has been an admirable Crichton in athletics, far above the average as a runner, a football player, a shot, in fact in out-door sports generally
