Western Coast of Africa from Cape Blanco to Cape Verde… JEFFERYS/SAYER 1789 map

SKU: P-8-005560

'The Western Coast of Africa from Cape Blanco to Cape Verde, exhibiting Senegambia proper by T. Jefferys'

A very scarce map of West Africa, covering the coast from Cape Blanco (modern-day Nouadhibou, Mauritania) through Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau, including navigation of the Senegal and Gambia rivers. The map features descriptions of English settlements along the Gambia River as of 1730, various forts on the Senegal River, and commentary on the ease of finding gold in the Bambouk region. It is updated from a 1751 map by Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, which was suppressed in France for military and commercial reasons. This English version was first published by Thomas Jefferys Sr, and Robert Sayer, a short-lived partnership established after Jefferys, who had invested in a series of commercially unviable projects to map the English counties, went bankrupt in 1768. Sayer brought new capital to the partnership in exchange to the rights to many of Jefferys' maps which established Sayer as a mapmaker in his own right when the partnership ended. Evidently, this map passed to Sayer as it here has Sayer's sole imprint. This is one of the few detailed English maps of this part of West Africa from the eighteenth century, and is in very good condition, with fine bright original colour. Institutional holdings include the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
