'A comparative view of the principal waterfalls, islands, lakes, rivers and mountains in the Western Hemisphere'
The Mississippi is indicated to be longer than the Amazon - neither river having been fully explored or charted at the date of publication - with both rivers indicated to be shorter than 3,500 miles long. The list of mountains by height is quite inaccurate, the continents not having been fully explored or surveyed by 1851. Aconcagua is indicated to be the third highest mountain in the western hemisphere (it is actually the highest), exceeded by Nevada de Sorata and Illimani, both in Bolivia. Nevada de Sorata is indicated to be c.25,000 feet in height - about 2,000 feet taller than Aconcagua's actual height - which would have made it the tallest mountain in the world outside the Himalayas. Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, is not shown at all on the chart - it was not identified as the tallest peak in North America until 1897. The tallest mountain in North America is indicated to be Cofre de Perote, Mexico. Mount St Elias is indicated at c12,500 feet to be lower than Long's Peak; The actual height of Mount St Elias is c18,000 ft.
