'Borough of Willesden - Condition of houses 1948'
An urban planning map of the Borough of Willesden showing the condition of houses in 1948 by John Morris. The map llustrates vividly the damage caused to London by Britain's post war urban planners. Take South Kilburn—singled out by Morris as "ripe for immediate redevelopment"—duly saw its attractive (if run down), high-density Victorian terraced housing demolished and replaced by an estate of high-rise brutalist tower blocks . By the early twenty-first century this estate was plagued by crime, necessitating another comprehensive redevelopment. Meanwhile, the adjacent Queen's Park area, whose Victorian houses (including my own) Morris predicted in 1949 had "less than 20 years' useful life remaining," has evolved into a sought-after residential neighborhood, much of which is now a designated Conservation Area that retains almost all of its period housing.
