Witches [WP/38]
A striking colour poster designed by Jan Pieńkowski, featuring a nocturnal fantasy scene of flying witches, grotesque creatures and a gothic castle silhouetted against a swirling, psychedelic sky. Executed in Pieńkowski’s characteristic cut-paper silhouette style, the composition blends fairytale and gothic fantasy with the bold colour sensibility of 1970s graphic design. Published by Gallery Five and printed in England, 1975. Pieńkowski (born Warsaw, 1936; emigrated to Britain in 1957) was one of the most influential illustrators of the late 20th century, celebrated for his inventive use of silhouette, collage and dramatic colour. He is best known to a wide audience as the co-creator and illustrator of the hugely successful children’s book series Meg and Mog (written by Helen Nicoll), whose visual language of playful witches and bold graphic storytelling resonates strongly with the imagery seen in this poster. Alongside his commercial and poster work, Pieńkowski produced numerous illustrated books, pop-up designs, and theatrical projects, establishing a distinctive style that bridges children’s illustration and adult fantasy art. A vivid and collectible example of British fantasy graphic design of the 1970s, closely associated with Pieńkowski’s celebrated Meg and Mog witch iconography.
