'Geological map of the districts of Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Krugersdorp, illustrating the position and extent of the sedimentary deposits and the probable continuation of the principal conglomerate beds'
A large and important late-19th-century geological map of the western Witwatersrand, covering the districts of Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, and Krugersdorp, compiled by David Draper, F.G.S., and published in 1896. Issued at a formative moment in the development of South Africa’s goldfields, the map illustrates the position and extent of sedimentary formations and the probable continuation of the principal gold-bearing conglomerate beds, making it a document of direct relevance to contemporary mining exploration. Finely coloured to distinguish geological strata, it is overlaid with a detailed cadastral framework showing numbered farms, land divisions, railways and watercourses. Geological cross-sections around the margins illustrate subsurface structure, underlining the map’s role as practical mining intelligence rather than a purely descriptive geological overview. Previously held in the collection of (and bearing ownership.withdrawal stamps of) the British Museum and subsequently the Natural History Museum.
