'新繪標準九龍油麻地詳細街道全圖 (Newly Drawn Standard Complete Detailed Street Map of Kowloon and Yau Ma Tei)'
An evocative Chinese-language folding plan of pre-war Kowloon, when dense street blocks along Nathan Road gave way rapidly to railway land, military ground, cemeteries, villages and open country. It records the original Kowloon–Canton Railway terminus and waterfront wharves at Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei’s shoreline and typhoon shelter, and Hung Hom’s industrial waterfront, including docks and the Green Island Cement works. Farther east, Kai Tak remains a compact early airfield, before wartime enlargement and the later harbour runway, while Kowloon Walled City forms an enclosed precinct beside Kowloon City. A decorative compass rose, extensive Chinese street nomenclature and an inset of Hong Kong and the New Territories add visual interest and topographical detail. The lower-right storm-signal table supplies precise dating evidence. Its ten-number code—including Signals 2 and 3 for south-westerly and south-easterly strong winds, and the locally unused Signal 4—matches the system introduced on 1 March 1931 and revised in 1935. This places the cartographic information or engraving most plausibly between these dates; no publisher or printing date is apparent. We found no institutional or market record for this map. These features give this elusive map exceptional appeal as a record of Kowloon before war and post-war urbanisation.
