'Yokohama and Kanagawa.'
A red-printed plan of Kanagawa and Yokohama on Edo Bay, showing the Japanese town, foreign settlement, landing places, naval yard, military camps, canals, roads, Mandarin Bluff, Hongomura, Treaty Point and the Tokai-do. The 1858 treaties named Kanagawa, but its shallow water hampered cargo handling and its position on the Tokai-do placed foreigners in a sensitive corridor. The shogunate instead prepared the more easily controlled Yokohama site across the water. Despite diplomatic objections, it became eastern Japan’s principal centre of European trade. Within eight years, fields, marsh and fishing settlement became a canal-bounded town sustained by silk and tea exports. Camps and the naval yard record the armed tension surrounding foreign residence; the shallow waterfront still required cargo transfer by barge. Published in 1867, the plan captures these arrangements during the final year of Tokugawa rule. Exceptionally scarce: our research located no other separate dealer or auction record for this map.

Packing
Items smaller than A4 size are usually packed in a stiffened, board-backed envelope. Larger items are rolled and packed in postal tubes. Large items which are too stiff to be rolled in wide-diameter tubes are mailed in all-board envelopes. In the unlikely event of damage in transit, please send the affected item or items back to us and we will provide a replacement or refund.

Returns
We accept returns for any reason if sent back to us within 14 days of receipt of your order. If any of your items are not as described, we will provide a full refund including reasonable return postage costs upon safe return to us. If you have changed your mind, you are responsible for the cost of returning the item to us. We describe the size, age and condition of all our products as fully and accurately as possible.
