York Town & Gloucester Point… besieged by the Allied Army—Gordon/Conder 1788 map
£760
SKU: P-6-112062
'York Town, and Gloucester Point, as besieged by The Allied Army.'
An excellent contemporary plan of the 1781 Siege of Yorktown, the decisive campaign that effectively brought major fighting in the American Revolutionary War to its conclusion. British fortifications at York Town and Gloucester Point are surrounded by converging American and French siege lines, while batteries, trenches, headquarters, encampments, roads and shipping reveal the tightening Allied investment of Cornwallis's army. An extensive explanatory key enables the progress of the siege to be followed in considerable detail, making this one of the most informative contemporary printed plans of the final campaign of the war. Published in the London first edition of one of the earliest major histories of the American Revolution, only seven years after the siege itself, the map appears only infrequently in the trade and is considerably scarcer than most contemporary magazine maps of the conflict.
