'最新九龍街道圖 (Latest Kowloon Street Map)'
Printed throughout in emphatic red, this Chinese-language folding plan is a practical street guide and a vivid portrait of Kowloon in 1964. It follows the dense urban corridor from Tsim Sha Tsui through Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok, extending east to Hung Hom, To Kwa Wan, Kowloon City and Kai Tak. The railway runs to the original Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront terminus; nearby, the former Whitfield Barracks occupies the ground opened as Kowloon Park in 1970. Kai Tak’s harbour runway projects into Kowloon Bay, and Kowloon Walled City remains part of the living urban fabric. Wharves, piers, public buildings and a typhoon-signal table reinforce the map’s everyday usefulness. Comparison with modern Kowloon is especially rewarding: the MTR had yet to open, the railway terminus had not moved to Hung Hom, and West Kowloon reclamation had not pushed the shoreline into Victoria Harbour. The imprint credits the 大眾實用叢書出版公司 (Popular Practical Book Series Publishing Company) with its drawing and dates it 1964; its folding format, detailed Chinese nomenclature and distribution address suggest a local guide for Chinese-reading residents and visitors. We could locate no institutional or market record for this issue, an unusually elusive survival of post-war Hong Kong street mapping.
