Designed by Janice Ashby in 1973, as South Africa introduced its Wine of Origin scheme, these six pictorial maps were issued in reduced format around 1975 as 6 Wine Maps of the Cape. They cover Paarl, Wellington and Franschhoek; Stellenbosch to False Bay; Constantia and Durbanville; Malmesbury and the Swartland; the Tulbagh valley; and Boberg, then a designation for fortified and liqueur wines around Paarl and Tulbagh. The maps mark vineyards and wine co-operatives against shaded mountains and enliven the Cape landscape with Cape Dutch houses, barrels, ships, local arms and notes on history. Together they capture the geography of Cape winegrowing at the start of formal origin protection, before later changes to district names and boundaries. Each sheet is offered separately.
