Fire and street fighting fix the Barrière Saint-Denis in the printed record of revolutionary Paris. The customs barrier, also known as the Barrière de la Chapelle, stood on the road north at the edge of the city, where duties were collected on goods. Antique prints titled Incendie de la Barrière St. Denis show it burning on 29 July 1830 during the July Revolution, with crowds, architecture and disorder packed into a single street scene, in versions published in 1831 and 1834. A plain view of the barrier dates from 1831, and a print of 1848 records a later conflict at the same gate.
