Winter dusk at Knaresborough, the river at Walton and industrial Leeds show the range of the English painter, writer and broadcaster Stephen Bone (1904–1958), son of the artist Muirhead Bone. The pictures come from his 1939 book Albion: An Artist's Britain, in which text and images explore the character of places across the country. Glen Dochart in snow and the village of Poxwell stand beside town and river scenes, far from a Britain of celebrated monuments alone, and the book’s themes of weather, settlement, work and the seasons shape what he chose to paint. They date from just before his wartime service as an official artist.
