Burnham in Buckinghamshire has two great subjects for the print collector: the ruins of its abbey and the ancient trees of Burnham Beeches. The abbey appears in Grose's engravings of 1783 and 1795, in a view by Greig of 1819, and in an 1808 scene of a lady feeding poultry and pigs among the surviving buildings. The beeches were painted and engraved throughout the nineteenth century, from an 1845 view to an 1883 print of the woods being dedicated to the public, and on to Harold Sutton Palmer's landscapes of 1920 and 1929. Paterson's road strip maps of 1785 and 1803 run from Burnham through Maidenhead and Reading to Newbury, and from Maidenhead through Marlow and Henley to Oxford.
