The Colosseum, the great amphitheatre of the Flavian emperors, has drawn artists and visitors to Rome for centuries, and these prints show it in many lights. There are views from the Palatine, the ruined arcades from outside, and the arena at sunset, in a storm and on a spring day, mostly from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A print of 1877 shows a sermon preached inside, a reminder of its later religious use. Architectural plates compare it with the Pantheon, the Theatre of Marcellus and other Roman monuments. The earliest item is Mallet's city plan of 1683, with the Colosseum among the churches of Rome and the Vatican.
