Cowley is an old Middlesex parish between Uxbridge and West Drayton, and its maps follow the change from a village in open country to part of London's western suburbs. Cary's sheets of 1786 and 1811 place it among Hillingdon, Hayes, Yiewsley and the villages around Heathrow, before suburban roads filled the country between them. Maps of 1933 and 1937 show development spreading south from Uxbridge, with neighbouring sheets reaching Ruislip and New Denham towards the Buckinghamshire boundary, and Geographers' A–Z plans of 1948, 1959 and 1964, with a map of 1965, trace the local roads through the middle decades of the century.
