Georgetown was a Maryland tobacco port on the Potomac before the federal capital was planned beside it, and antique maps still show its compact streets standing apart from Washington's larger grid. Alvin Jewett Johnson's plan of the town and the City of Washington, from his New Illustrated Family Atlas, appears in editions of 1861, 1865 and 1866, with the Colton version from Colton's General Atlas following in 1869. A United States Coast Survey chart of 1871 approaches from the water, covering the Potomac from Indian Head up to the town. Prints add a glimpse of the town from Analostan Island in 1874 and the tomb of John Howard Payne in 1895.
