China's Grand Canal is seen at two scales, as the setting for a village scene in Shandong and as a line drawn across the whole country. The village of Kya kya on the canal appears in a print of 1746 after Nieuhof, while Edward Weller's antique maps of China, issued in 1862 and 1863 for Cassell's Weekly Dispatch Atlas, trace the waterway with the Great Wall and the routes of Amherst and Macartney. Mayers, Dennys and King's Map of the Yang-tze-kiang, published in 1867 in The Treaty Ports of China and Japan, shows the canal beside the Yangtze.
