Jones, Robert Owen

Major-General Robert Owen Jones, Royal Engineers (served 1856-1887), oversaw the maps produced in 1888 report of the Local Government Boundary Commission which proposed a number of alterations to local jurisdictions including the transfer of many parishes out of their existing counties to adjoining counties. The report was produced further to the Local Government (Boundaries) Act 1887, which established boundary commissioners to reform the areas of administrative bodies in England and Wales in preparation for the creation of elected councils by the Local Government Act 1888. In the event, local opposition ensured that many of the recommendations of the commissioners were not carried out.
