Bellin’s Petit Atlas Maritime of 1764 is a navigator’s atlas of harbours, river mouths and island channels, mapping the approaches to ports around the world in close detail. Its maps were the work of the marine engineer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, issued under the authority of the Duc de Choiseul. Asian subjects include Mergui and its archipelago, Trincomalee, the Gulf of Cambay and the Coromandel coast, while in Africa the coverage reaches the Sestos River and Cape Mesurado. Several historic names correspond to places now called Myeik, Khambhat and Monrovia, and few continental maps give these ports anything like such attention.
