Seaports, wooded landscapes and stories from the Bible and antiquity fill these engravings after Claude Gellée, known as Claude Lorrain, who was born around 1604 or 1605 and died in Rome in 1682. Published in 1835, they show the Queen of Sheba and St Ursula embarking from harbours, while Narcissus, Sinon and the marriage of Isaac and Rebecca are set in the open landscapes shaped by his study of the Italian countryside. A tree study and a pastoral scene give the natural setting the whole stage.
