Ulysses S. Grant, Horace Greeley and Charles Sumner appear in Vanity Fair's caricature series in these prints by Thomas Nast, published in 1872. Nast (1840–1902) was a cartoonist whose career is closely associated with American political satire. Grant and Greeley tie the group to the political contest of that year, and Charles Francis Adams and Hamilton Fish bring in international arbitration and foreign affairs, so that the presidency, the press, the Senate and diplomacy are all represented for a British readership.
