Rainham lies on the London to Dover road in north Kent, with St Margaret's Church standing beside Watling Street, the Roman road, at the centre of the town. Its antique maps are road strips from the coaching age. Thomas Gardner's map of 1719 follows the whole route through Rochester and Canterbury to Dover, Owen and Bowen's strips of 1753 cover the journey from London through Dartford to Rochester, and Daniel Paterson's itineraries of 1785 and 1803 take the road on from Rainham through Sittingbourne and Faversham to Canterbury.
