S.D.U.K. Star Charts
The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK) published a celebrated series of celestial charts in the 1830s and 1840s, designed to make astronomy accessible to the general public. Based on the work of eminent astronomers including William Jamieson, these finely engraved star maps depict the northern and southern skies with precision and clarity. Presented on a gnomonic projection, the charts show constellations, principal stars, nebulae, and the Milky Way with elegant detailing and often subtle original hand colouring. The series includes hemispherical views, equatorial projections, and detailed plates of the zodiac constellations. Widely admired for their scientific accuracy and visual appeal, SDUK star charts remain prized today by collectors of antique celestial maps and enthusiasts of 19th-century scientific publishing.
