Sebastian Münster's view of 1572 shows the city and its basilica, with a companion plate praising the wine of the fertile Valais, and d'Anville's Alpine map of 1754 spells the name Syon. The guidebook maps of 1897 to 1938 cover the valleys south of the town towards Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Hérens and Entremont, while vintage sheets add the Rhône valley resorts, Crans-Montana and Sierre, and a 1969 ski map of Thyon and the Four Valleys.
