Strachey (1912–1999), a British author, created Journeys of Frodo in 1981 by reading Tolkien's narrative alongside his published maps. The sheets follow roads and paths from the Shire through Bree, Rivendell, Moria and Lórien towards Mordor, trace the separate routes of the rest of the Fellowship, and bring in the battles at Helm's Deep, the Pelennor and the Morannon. Changes of scale let particular crossings, passes and valleys be studied more closely than a general map allows, so that Shelob's lair, the approaches to Mount Doom and the Grey Havens each become a stage of the journey.
