'Tombleson’s panoramic map of the Thames and Medway'

The whole Thames in one strip nearly one and a half metres long, from its source near Cirencester, ‘called here the Isis’, through Lechlade, Oxford, Abingdon, Maidenhead and Windsor to London and the estuary at Southend and the Nore, with the Medway drawn in beside it from Maidstone through Rochester and Chatham to Sheerness. Tombleson’s famous panorama shows the river as a journey, its towns in miniature bird’s-eye view, its locks, bridges and riverside houses named and the railways crossing and recrossing the water. First published in the 1830s, the design stayed in print for a century; this is G. W. Bacon’s colour-printed issue of the later 1930s, probably 1936–1939, brought up to date with the new stations at Falconwood and Cassington, both opened in 1936, and folded into its original green cloth case. Bampton station still appears under the name it lost in May 1940, which also points to an issue before then.

Undated, probably 1936–1939 (circa 1937). Cassington and Falconwood stations, both opened in 1936, are shown, while Bampton station still has its original name, which the Great Western Railway changed to Brize Norton and Bampton on 1 May 1940. Bacon’s Norwich Street premises were bombed out in 1941, so the printed address suggests publication by about that year. A pre-war issue is more likely than wartime production of this decorative panorama, and the Bampton name points to a date before May 1940. Circa 1941 is therefore a probable outer limit.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
