Whitchurch-on-Thames is the Oxfordshire village on the north bank of the river, joined to Pangbourne in Berkshire by a toll bridge that has carried the crossing since 1792. Henry Taunt's Thames maps of 1879 and 1887 follow the river past Pangbourne, the bridge and Shooters Hill. Prints show the bridge in 1897 and the church and mill in 1901, and Mortimer Menpes's Whitchurch Lock of 1906 adds the colour of an Edwardian river journey.
