Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 126 [Hatton Garden, Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell Road and Saffron Hill]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 126, covers Hatton Garden and Saffron Hill (EC1), London's jewellery quarter. Johnson Matthey, refiners to the Bank of England, had been here since 1822 before moving its head office out in 1975 and selling up in 1998. Yet the trade stayed, and nearly 300 jewellery businesses work here today. When the sheet was in use, Omega watch workshops sat among substantial printing and engraving premises, including the Sun Engraving Company and the Bradbury Agnew printing works. Their neighbours then also included the Cable and Wireless workshops and laboratories and the post office in Global House. On Saffron Hill a 1930s print works became the Ziggurat, which has been flats since 1997, and its industrial floor space turned into sought-after homes, while Leather Lane still keeps its market. The plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet, from March 1970, notes a vacancy at 14 Hatton Wall. Resurveyed and reissued in June 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Clerkenwell Road, Farringdon Road, St Cross Street, Saffron Street and Kirby Street.
