Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 128 [Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell Road, Bowling Green Lane and St Peter's Italian Church]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 128, covers Clerkenwell and Farringdon Road (EC1), where St Peter's Italian Church, consecrated in 1863, still anchors London's Italian community and its July processione. The sheet also shows Lubetkin's Grade I Finsbury Health Centre of 1935–8, which still treats patients. Through the school for printing, the Hatch, Pinner & Co. Ltd bookbinders' warehouse and numerous printing premises, it traces the book and print trades that lie behind Clerkenwell's design businesses and showrooms today. From 1976 until it left for King's Cross in 2008, the Guardian followed these trades at 119 Farringdon Road, and The Ray offices of 2019 now fill the site. Peabody Buildings (Clerkenwell Estate) and GPO offices also appear on the sheet. The plans were compiled for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carry pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated corrections, from March 1970, mark the first floor of 68 Farringdon Road, in block 1144, as vacant. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in July 1942, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Clerkenwell Road, Bowling Green Lane, Northampton Road, Baker's Row, Warner Street, Ray Street, Back Hill, Herbal Hill and Topham Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume VI. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Small marginal tears. Size excludes the tab at the side. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Sheet 127 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
