Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 144 [Old Street, City Road, Leonard Street and the Central Foundation Schools]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 144, covers Old Street and City Road (EC2), today's "Silicon Roundabout" quarter. It shows the quarter in the days when clothing manufacture and a Cowper Street optical-goods factory stood among schools and public offices. The Central Foundation Schools have been on Cowper Street since 1869 and survive as Central Foundation Boys' School. Shoreditch County Court on Leonard Street occupied the 1881 building of Finsbury Technical College, which was England's first, and the court itself closed in 2006. The Board of Trade Registration Offices on City Road housed Companies House from 1963 until it moved to Cardiff in 1976. On the sheet, S. Greenman Ltd's cabinet sundries and the Post Office Training School are a world away from the technology and media businesses now filling Shoreditch. Made to assess property and fire risk, the plans were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses and rebuilding, and the latest dated corrections here are March 1970 vacancy annotations. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1946, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Singer Street, Tabernacle Street and Clere Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume VI. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Small edge tears. Size excludes the tab at the side. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Sheet 143 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
