Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 146A [Old Street, City Road, East Road and the Leysian Mission]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 146A, covers the Old Street roundabout and City Road (EC1), and its prize is the junction itself. The roundabout, the sunken Old Street Underground Station booking hall and the pedestrian subways appear as 1960s work pasted onto the 1954 base, and they record the remaking of a crossroads later nicknamed "Silicon Roundabout". The sheet shows Sutton Model Dwellings, which were built in 1911 from William Sutton's bequest for low-rented housing, surviving around the roundabout together with General Post Office offices, Paterson Court and Hudson's House. Printers, clothing and quilt factories around Corsham Street, and engineers and tool makers around Brunswick Place and Cranwood Street, show the manufacturing economy that preceded the technology cluster. Today the same district is associated with software and digital-media businesses, a change from the making of physical goods to the provision of digital services. The roundabout did not last, however. Transport for London began removing it in 2019, and since January 2021 traffic has run two ways through a redesigned junction. Made to assess property and fire risk, these plans were kept up to date with pasted overlays recording new uses and rebuilding. The latest dated corrections on this sheet are March 1970 vacancy annotations. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1954, with a 1954 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include East Road, Peerless Street, Baldwin Street, Brunswick Place, Cranwood Street, Corsham Street, Chart Street and Staff Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume VI. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 145 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
