Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 148 [Shoreditch: Curtain Road, Old Street, Rivington Street and Shoreditch Town Hall]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 148, covers Shoreditch Town Hall, Hoxton Square and Curtain Road (EC2 and EC1), where cabinet factories, upholstery workshops and timber storage then made the furniture trade unmistakable. The Town Hall of 1866 lost its council when Hackney was formed in 1965. The Shoreditch Town Hall Trust took it on in 1997 and now runs it as an arts venue. Hoxton Square, which dates from 1683, held the White Cube gallery from 2000 to 2012 and is now home to bars and offices. The sheet also names the London County Council Technical School, a twine and paper warehouse, Albert Buildings, furniture factories, and Brown Bros Ltd's garage, repairs and stores building and club. It was amended for fire-risk assessment with pasted slips recording new uses and rebuilding. Its latest dated correction, of March 1970, marks an H.W. warehouse with concrete floors on Charlotte Road under construction. Reissued in July 1938, with a 1950 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Old Street, Leonard Street, Coronet Street, Rufus Street, Great Eastern Street, Rivington Street, Bateman's Row and New Inn Street.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume VI. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 147 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
