Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 149 [Shoreditch: Curtain Road, Great Eastern Street, Scrutton Street and Holywell Lane]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 149, covers Great Eastern Street, Curtain Road and Holywell Lane (EC2) as they were when the district made, stocked and serviced goods, long before creative businesses and nightlife arrived. Its premises then included Brown Brothers' motor-trade warehouses, furniture and clothing factories, Brodies' ships' stores and the London Electricity Board's Hearn Street substation. The Security Express van park served the Shoreditch depot of the 1983 robbery, which was then Britain's biggest theft of cash. The London Midland railway viaduct lost its trains when Broad Street closed in 1986, and today it carries Village Underground's rooftop tube carriages above a venue that opened in 2007. In 2012 Hewett Street yielded the Curtain Theatre of 1577, Romeo and Juliet's playhouse. Kept current for fire-risk assessment with pasted overlays recording new uses and rebuilding, the sheet carries March 1970 vacancy annotations as its latest dated corrections. It was resurveyed and reissued in August 1950, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Leonard Street, Ravey Street, Phipp Street, Gatesborough Street, Luke Street, Christina Street, Scrutton Street and New Inn Broadway.

Insurance Plan of London, Volume VI. Charles E. Goad, London.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 150 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
