Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 268B [Westminster Bridge Road, Waterloo Road, Baylis Road and Morley College]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 268B, covers Morley College and Westminster Bridge Road in Lambeth (SE1), and it hides a secret in plain sight. Century House, which the sheet labels simply as offices, was MI6's headquarters from 1964 until the service moved to Vauxhall Cross in 1994. By 2003 it had become the Perspective apartments, as state secrets gave way to private homes. Morley College, where Gustav Holst directed the music from 1907 to 1924, appears in its rebuilt postwar complex. The Church Missionary Society offices and chapel then stood nearby, and the society itself left London for Oxford in 2007. On a nineteenth-century base plan overlaid with postwar redevelopment, the sheet also shows Christ Church and Upton Chapel, Lambeth police station and the Campbell Buildings railway dwellings, which were cleared in the early 1980s. Goad's fire-risk plans were kept current with pasted amendments for new uses, changed layouts, demolitions and new construction. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. Pasted revisions are present, but none on this sheet carries a date. A key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Baylis Road, Frazier Street, Pearman Street, Burdett Street, Waterloo Road, Webber Street, Gray Street, Kennington Road and King Edward Walk.

Condition: Good |

Good; suitable for framing. A working sheet from one of the bound Goad volumes historically kept by fire-insurance offices, updated over decades with pasted correction slips. The build-up of correction slips has left the sheet stiff and gently undulating rather than flat, a characteristic of these working plans. There is age toning and light surface soiling, consistent with its long use as a working map. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Please contact us if you would like to arrange to view this map. Sheet 272–275 is printed on the reverse side. Each map is listed as a separate product, but the two maps share a single sheet, so whichever you buy, you receive both. If both maps are ordered together, we will send the sheet and refund the second purchase in full.

Condition Guide

We assess the condition of each item using three categories: Good, Fair, and Poor. We strive to ensure that any significant flaws are clearly shown in the images provided and detailed in the accompanying condition statement.

Good

The item presents well, with no significant flaws, and is in frameable condition. Minor imperfections—such as light spotting or offsetting, small blemishes, tight margins, neatly repaired tears, or discreet/professionally executed restoration—do not materially detract from its overall appearance.

Fair

The item shows noticeable flaws but remains in frameable condition. Some buyers may feel these imperfections affect its visual appeal. Typical issues may include more prominent spotting, blemishes, bleed-through from the reverse, obvious offsetting, visible or extensive restoration, wear along fold lines or junctures, small wormholes, trimmed or closely cropped edges, or less carefully executed repairs.

Poor

The item has major flaws that significantly impact its presentation and/or suitability for framing. These may include heavy spotting, staining, bleed-through, offsetting, unrepaired damage, or poorly executed repairs such as tears, holes, or areas of paper loss (including within the printed image). The item may also be fragile and prone to further deterioration.
