Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 264–267 [Waterloo: The Cut, Blackfriars Road, Waterloo Road and the Old Vic]
Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 264–267, covers Waterloo's The Cut and Roupell Street (SE1), and it shows the Old Vic Theatre while Olivier's National Theatre company was resident there. That residency ran from 1963 until the company's South Bank building opened in 1976. Roupell Street's terraces were built from the 1820s and have been protected since 1976. The sheet shows them near the Peabody Buildings, the Ipsden Buildings artizans' dwellings, St Andrew's Church and School, and Christ Church, which was rebuilt in 1958–59 after the Blitz. The sheet also shows Southwark College, the Wootton Street day nursery and the I.P.C. Business Press premises close by, and IPC itself dated from 1963. Car parks, a park, prefabricated dwellings and open ground then filled the gaps, while large blocks drawn on the enlarged sheet 264B are left blank here. Pasted overlays kept this risk plan current with new occupants, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction is a vacancy note of March 1971 on the Blackfriars Road frontage of block 2610, and a key plan from the same group also records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Waterloo Road, Stamford Street, Cornwall Road, Coin Street, Aquinas Street, Theed Street, Whittlesey Street, Hatfields, Meymott Street, Joan Street, Isabella Street, Ufford Street and Short Street.
